A Week in the Bush Vol. 113

on Jul 28, 2016

Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

The lions are doing very well! The whole pride came together a few days ago and it seems like the youngest female is in full mating ritual with the bigger Charleston male. The rest of the pride had some good fun chasing hyenas and Maxabeni male leopard around the one day but had no success in catching one of them to show who is the dominant predator in the area!

Mandleve/Floppy Ear surprised us when she brought her two adorable cubs out of the den site! They showed no fear with a leader like their mom. She eventually decided to move her den site as the one Charleston male made his way there a few times, but they seem to be in great condition, now only hoping they make it to adulthood. Read more about this is Mike’s recent blog, A Royal Introduction.

We have been fortunate enough to see a lot more of the Kigelia female leopard, but she is still walking on the edge as she keeps on moving far east into her mom’s territory and getting closer and closer to where Little Bush hides her cub when she goes off hunting.

Little Bush keeps performing great as a mother and provides enough food for her cub. We found her in a tree with a fresh bushbuck kill which they managed to finish without losing anything to any scavengers.

It was really nice to see the Tatowa female leopard again and we managed to spend some time with her one night as she tried stalking a duiker but failed and then almost got a scrub hare.

General game viewing has been good as always. This magnificent wildebeest was captured grazing in the golden morning light.

A female giraffe bent down to drink and gave us a water show – a sight you don’t see every day as giraffe get most of their water through the leaves they eat of thorny trees.

Elephants have been in abundance lately and we’ve been seeing a few elephant cows with massive tusk’s which is great for a good gene pool to come through!

And to top the week off on a high note, we had 20mm of rain on Tuesday night and already in some areas new shoots of grass are showing and it looks like more rain is coming our way!
