From Student to Field Guide

on Nov 26, 2024

My journey as a field guide all began with a passion for nature and conservation.

Let’s start at the beginning. In 2018, I took my first step toward this dream by enrolling in one of Bushwise’s comprehensive field guide courses. This was where the foundation of my career was built. At Bushwise, I gained the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel in this rewarding profession.

I was eager to learn – and I certainly did! With experienced instructors and an in-depth curriculum, the course covered everything from tracking and birding to animal behaviour and guiding techniques. I received hands-on training and assessments that truly reflected what life as a field guide would be like.

After completing my studies, I was placed in an internship where I put my knowledge into practice. During this time, I led guided tours, shared insights with guests from diverse backgrounds, and received ongoing training and mentorship. These experiences prepared me exceptionally well for my future career.

Fast forward to today – I am living my dream, working as a field guide at the renowned Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve. It’s incredible to be immersed in the breathtaking African wilderness, living my passion, sharing my knowledge, and contributing to a greater purpose: conservation.

During my time at Sabi Sabi, I’ve grown tremendously. I’ve learned to adapt to my environment, connected with extraordinary individuals, and developed stronger communication skills. My commitment to continuous learning has been key to thriving in this industry.

Looking back, from my beginnings at Bushwise to where I am now, I am deeply grateful to everyone who played a role in my journey. This experience has been truly transformative.

Looking ahead, I am excited to explore other aspects of guiding and conservation while working at Sabi Sabi. I hope to specialise in birding or wildlife photography and collaborate with conservation organisations. I also aspire to become a mentor, inspiring others to follow their dreams. With all the lessons I’ve learned along the way, I want to help others achieve what I have – working for a world-renowned 5-star lodge in South Africa.

This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to share more updates in the years to come as my career evolves!
