Cederberg Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc
on May 02, 2020“Wine a little, laugh a lot.”
Being one of the five most planted wine varietals in South Africa, Sauvignon Blanc is literally a dime a dozen and a household name in South Africa.
However, this particular Sauvignon Blanc is one of its kind. I am convinced once you’ve tasted this David Niewoudt masterpiece, there will no argument. DEFINITELY one of the best, if not THE BEST Sauvignon Blanc out there.
The wine derives its name from a treacherous piece of South African coastline known as “Spookdraai” directly translated “Ghost Corner” at the southern tip of Africa. It is here where many a ship and sailor met their fate.
Not too far inland from “Spookdraai” and its “ghosts” is Elim wine country. It is here where David Niewoudt and his team are responsible for growing and cultivating some of the best Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the country.
Layers of Green Fig, Fynbos and Gooseberries all tie together with steely minerality from the cool fresh ocean air that graces the fruit while still on the vines prior to harvesting.
Upon deciding which food will partner best with this fine bottle of wine, I suggest first dibs goes to a seafood and poultry dish. Easy, simple and light. Not too many complex flavours, keep it fresh.
Thus, unlike the name and stories surrounding the ships and their crew, there is NOTHING scary about this wine, except for running out... This WILL BE CATASTROPHIC! My suggestion, at least three bottles in the wine fridge at any given time. This should get you to port to stock up for the return journey! Cheers and safe sailing!!!
