Rhinoceros
on Sep 21, 2018It’s World Rhino Day today and we are celebrating Rhinos from all over the world. There are only five different species of Rhinoceros left in the world, these are the White Rhino, Black Rhino, Sumatran Rhino, Greater One-Horned Rhino and the Javan Rhino. World Rhino Day is held to make people aware of the protection and well-being of Rhinos.
One of the most prehistoric looking animals known to mankind is the Rhinoceros. To me Rhinos are the first non-extinct animals that comes to mind when thinking about Dinosaurs. They have thick skin that forms rolls over their limbs and on their sides making it look like they have been clothed with armoured body plating. A group of Rhinos are also known as a Crash of Rhinos - probably because their body shape and structure gives the impression that they can crash through anything in their way. We have come to love these tough yet peaceful animals, but their existence is at stake.
Rhino poaching has become an increasing problem, statistics shows that on average three Rhinos are being poached every day worldwide. Rhinos are being poached because their horns, which are made up of keratin, is used for a range of medicinal and traditional uses.
Even though we only get the Black and White Rhino in South Africa, we are still home to most of the world’s Rhino population. South Africa is doing everything it can to stop Rhino Poaching in its tracks, but we need to stand together as one to fight Rhino poaching.
We want to thank everyone that has contributed in the act of saving our Rhinos. Let us all stand together to stop the killing of Rhinos, let us save our Rhinos for future generations to witness these incredible creatures.
Happy World Rhino Day!
